The Golf Dress: Then and Now

The Golf Dress: Then and Now

The Golf Dress, Then and Now

The golf dress didn’t start on the course. It started with function.

At the turn of the 20th century, the shirtdress started as a nurse’s uniform. Cotton, breathable, easy to move in. Built for function first.

And that foundation still matters.

A shirtdress isn’t just a dress. It’s a dress built from the structure of a shirt. Button front. Collar. Sleeves. The same construction you’d find in men’s shirting, extended into a longer silhouette.

That’s what gives it its edge. It holds shape, but never feels rigid. You can wear it loose, cinched, buttoned up, or slightly undone. It adapts.

That adaptability is what brought it into sport.

By the 1920s and 30s, versions of the shirtdress started appearing in tennis and golf, eventually becoming the uniform on course.

For decades after, dresses and skirts remained the standard. Less about performance, more about social expectation.

But the silhouette didn’t stay static.

Early versions were simple. Cotton, straight, often belted. Built more for appearance than movement.

By the 1950s and 60s, they became more structured. Fuller skirts, defined waists, a more polished look that reflected the era.

Then gradually, things loosened.

Lighter fabrics. Cleaner lines. Less restriction. The focus shifted from how it looked to how it moved.

Then the thinking shifted.

Designers like Claire McCardell, widely regarded as the pioneer of American sportswear, began designing for real life. Clothes that allowed movement. Pieces that could keep up.

That philosophy is what shapes the modern golf dress.

Today’s versions still reference the original. Clean lines. A nod to shirting. But now they’re built with intention. Stretch where it matters. Breathability. Structure that holds without restricting. Often paired with shorts underneath, so you can actually play without thinking about it.

And the best ones still follow the same principle they always have.

One piece that can be worn from the course into the rest of your day.
